Jesus Heals | The Wolfe Notes

These notes follow our 7-step rhythm for Bible study. Unless otherwise noted, all Bible quotes are from GOD'S WORD translation.


Jesus Heals

1. Summary

Jesus went from the synagogue in Capernaum to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was sick, and they asked Jesus to help her. He ordered the fever to leave, and it did! Immediately, she rose and began preparing food for them. Then, everyone started bringing anyone they knew who needed healing, and Jesus healed them! Many demons recognized Jesus as they were cast out, but Jesus demanded their silence.

2. N/W/L Statements

  1. I NOTICED that:
    1. Jesus treated illness like a demon. 
    2. Contact was common for curing.
  2. I WONDER:
    1. How does healing work. Do illnesses have their own controlling force? Is there a connection between the spiritual realm and physical ailments? 
    2. If the demons talk amongst themselves.
  3. I think God wants us to LEARN that Jesus has authority over the physical and spiritual realms.

3. Key Verse

He bent over her, ordered the fever to leave, and it went away. She got up immediately and prepared a meal for them. Luke 4:38

This verse shows Jesus' authority over illness and the quickness and completeness of her healing. It also shows her heart: as soon as she was healed she started serving.

4. God's Character

  1. God wants us to be whole.
    1. He is the healer of the brokenhearted. He is the one who bandages their wounds. Psalm 147:3
    2. I will look for those that are lost, bring back those that have strayed away, bandage those that are injured, and strengthen those that are sick. I will destroy those that are fat and strong. I will take care of my sheep fairly. Ezekiel 34:16
    3. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. I Peter 5:10 NIV
  2. God cares about how we encounter the truth about Him.
    1. "Beware of false prophets. They come to you disguised as sheep, but in their hearts they are vicious wolves. You will know them by what they produce. Matthew 7:15-16
    2. Then Jeremiah told the prophet Hananiah, "Now listen, Hananiah, the LORD hasn't sent you. You have made these people believe a lie. This is what the LORD says: I'm going to remove you from the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have encouraged rebellion against the LORD." So the prophet Hananiah died in the seventh month of that year. Jeremiah 28:15-17
    3. One of your people, claiming to be a prophet or to have prophetic dreams, may predict a miraculous sign or an amazing thing. What he predicts may even take place. But don't listen to that prophet or dreamer if he says, "Let's worship and serve other gods." (Those gods may be gods you've never heard of.) The LORD your God is testing you to find out if you really love him with all your heart and with all your soul. Worship the LORD your God fear him, obey his commands, listen to what he says, serve him, and be loyal to him. That prophet or dreamer must be put to death because he preached rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt and freed you from slavery. He was trying to lead you away from following the directions the LORD your God gave you. You must get rid of this evil. Deuteronomy 13:1-5
  3. God heals.
    1. Praise the LORD, my soul, and never forget all the good he has done: He is the one who forgives all your. sins, the one who heals all your diseases, the one who rescues your life from the pit, the one who crowns you with mercy and compassion, the one who fills your life with blessings so that you become young again like an eagle. Psalm 103:2-5
    2. Isaiah hadn't gone as far as the middle courtyard when the LORD spoke his word to him: "Go back and say to Hezekiah, leader of my people, 'This is what the LORD God of your ancestor David says: I've heard your prayer. I've seen your tears. Now I'm going to heal you. The day after tomorrow you will go to the LORD's temple. I'll give you 15 more years to live. I'll rescue you and defend this city from the control of the king of Assyria for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.'" 2 Kings 10:4-6
    3. See, I am the only God. There are no others. I kill, and I make alive. I wound, and I heal, and no one can rescue you from my power. Deuteronomy 32:39 

5. Pray

Father God, I know You heal, and I need healing. I know You can instantly cure my maladies and make me whole. And, while I would love it if You did, what I care about even more is who You are and that You want me to know You. Show me Your miracles. Teach me to believe in Your ability to heal, but remind me that living in the truth of who You are is the most important thing.

6. Act

  • Pray for healing while believing He can.
  • Know in your heart who He is, and that eventually, your healing will come.
  • Seek truth from faithful sources. A faithful source will always point to God as truth and seek to know Him through the Bible, His holy word.

  1. ? Why did the people wait until sunset to approach Jesus for healing? (Luke 4:30)
    1. Jesus' synagogue visit was likely on Sabbath. The custom would have been to wait until after sunset to seek healing. - NIV, Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible
  2. ! Jesus rebukes and things happen: demons leave (Luke 4:35, 41), sicknesses cease (Luke 4:39, and storms stop (Luke 8). *These three examples show Jesus' control over the spiritual, physical, and natural realms.
  3. ! There seems to be a connection between laying on of hands and healing. (Luke 4:40)
    1. x [Jairus, the synagogue leader] begged Jesus, "My little daughter is dying. Come, lay your hands on her so that she may get well and live." Mark 5:23 (See our Mark 5 notes.)
    2. x [Jesus] couldn't work any miracles [in Nazareth] except to lay his hands on a few sick people and cure them. Mark 6:5 (See our Mark 6 notes.)
    3. x Ananias left and entered Judas' house. After he placed his hands on Saul, Ananias said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way to Damascus, sent me to you. He wants you to see again and to be filled with the Holy Spirit." Immediately, something like fish scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. Then Saul stood up and was baptized. Acts 9:17-18
