It's nearing February and for the first time this winter, I'm feeling chilly. The heater has been running almost nonstop. Today, I'm looking forward to spring. What about you? This month we're thinking about our thoughts. What we allow ourselves to think about matters. Holding thoughts captive and testing them to see if they are good, lovely, and true is a skill all of us can grow in - leaders and learners alike. Because what we think about affects how we treat ourselves, others, and ultimately who we are becoming.  We invite you to take this step with us! At a time when we are to be thankful, I'm finding myself feeling like the work I do is thankless. And I wonder if you feel the same. I imagine you do. It is rare to have the littles you lead and love thank you for the tireless work you do, especially this time of year. Maybe in Christmas wishes, Valentine cards, and end-of-year appreciation gifts, but at Thanksgiving? Nah, they are frustrated, just like you. They need a break, just like you. They find it hard to feel motivated, just like you. So take a deep breath with me, Leaders. Let's press on together. When it is time to rest, make sure you rest. That way when your energy is needed, you have it. Every November we're challenged to focus living with an attitude of gratitude. Science supports it, and Jesus preached it. Gratitude transforms our thinking.  I wonder if we might employ this in the classroom, and perhaps you already do. When the mood gets dreary, work together to make a quick gratitude list. Or have a gratitude jar. Here, classmates deposit thankful statements. Pull one to read whenever your room needs a gratitude lift. How do you practice gratitude in your classroom? If you've been around Wolfe Stew for long, you know that I have a love/hate relationship with October. I love the season, that our nephew's birthday is this month, and that I get to start making stews and baking with pumpkin! But Halloween has lost its appeal for me. Yet, as is true for all of us, I have the power to choose what I focus on. So, I'll focus on the things that bring me JOY. I hope you're doing the same in your classroom. As the October to December season creeps in and students start thinking more and more about holidays and less and less about academics, remember you too have the power to focus on the victories instead of the disappointments. And that is my October challenge for you: before you head home each night, choose one victory from the day to carry with you. We are almost done with our first full week of school and that, as you know, is an accomplishment worth celebrating. The biggest obstacle has been staying cool; the Mr.'s school has no air conditioning. But he is loving his fifth-grade learners! They are rising to the challenge of being leaders and already showing noticeably increased levels of responsibility. How about you? Have you started school yet? It's nearly here! Do you hear the school bells ringing? Students chattering with excitement while teachers firmly, but lovingly, guide them? Pencil sharpeners buzzing? Pages turning? It's back to school time!  The Mr. is so excited to be back in 5th grade this year, and the Mrs. is looking forward to helping him plan that more in-depth content. To us, June means rest. It is the first month of freedom from the busyness of school and we feel minimal pressure regarding next year's commencement. In June, we breathe.
